What discounts can I get?
Children travel affordably in both the long-distance trains and commuter traffic. Children under the age of 4 travel for free and kids aged between 4-17 with a child discount on the long-distance trains. On VR's commuter trains children under the age of 7 travel for free and children between 7-17 years of age with a child discount.
How to get a discount for a child
Situations in which children get a discount or travel for free
Children under 4 travel free of charge
Children under 4 travel free of charge in domestic long-distance traffic when they are accompanied by an adult and they do not have a designated seat. If you want to ensure that a child under 4 has a seat of their own, you need to buy a children’s ticket.
Discounts for passengers aged 4–17
Passengers aged 4–17 in long-distance traffic are eligible for a 40 % discount on single tickets for long-distance traffic, multi-tickets and season tickets.
Minimum ticket price €3.
Tickets for sleeping berths
A child travelling in the same sleeping berth does not need their own ticket, but kindly inform our customer service 0600 41 900 (2 € / answered call + lnc/mcc)about the child traveling with you. No discounts are applicable to night train cabins.
Children under 7 travel free of charge
Children aged under 7 travel free of charge on board VR’s commuter traffic trains. Passengers pushing a child aged under 7 in a pushchair, pram or wheelchair also travel free of charge on board VR’s commuter traffic trains.
Discounts for passengers aged 7–17
Passengers aged 7–17 are eligible for a 50 % discount on single tickets, season tickets and multi-tickets in VR commuter traffic.
Children under 12 travel free of charge.
Children under 12 travel free of charge with an adult who holds an Interrail train ticket. Up to two children under 12 are allowed to travel free of charge with one adult.
A cheaper ticket for a child
Prams and pushchairs can be taken on trains for free in our domestic long-distance and commuter trains and on trains to Russia. Please fold up the pram if the train is full. Our personnel will help you lift the pram to the train if you need help.
Train trips are an experience for children. Time flies in the coach with a play area and hunger can be tamed in the restaurant car. Our trains serve the entire family and guarantee a great journey for both children and adults.
